The Bookstore Between Us

The rain had just begun when Emma ducked into the old bookstore on Copenhagen’s side street. The shop smelled of paper and dust, its shelves stacked with novels that seemed to whisper forgotten secrets. Emma wasn’t looking for love — she was looking for shelter. As she browsed, she noticed a man struggling to reach a book on the top shelf. Tall but not quite tall enough, he stretched awkwardly until Emma stepped forward. “Need help?” she asked, smiling. He laughed. “I guess even tall people have limits.” Emma handed him the book. He glanced at the cover — a collection of poetry. “I’m Daniel,” he said. “Emma.” And just like that, the bookstore became more than shelter. They began talking, first about books, then about life.
